Over the past decade, Kevin Durant has built a reputation for mingling with fans on X (formerly Twitter). Discussions revolved around various topics, from his legacy to his off-court issues.

And fans and X users did not spare a thing on KD – not even his “ashy skin.”

At first, the Houston Rockets superstar replied and backed down against his critics, as he always does. However, recently, he decided to own and control the narrative. He not only embraced his dry skin but also made money out of it by agreeing to be the new face of skincare brand, CeraVe.

In an ambush interview by a fan, Durant revealed that he was paid $2 million to endorse the product – an offer that even he could not refuse.

The “New Face of Legs”

In late January, he first teased about his CeraVe sponsorship by posting a video of him reading mean posts about his dry ankles. It is a nod to a popular segment of the late-night show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” where celebrities do the same thing.

This first drop sent the X world into a frenzy, with users in disbelief and even finding humor in Durant’s move to represent them. The ad campaign continued in early February, hinting at his new deal by reposting a picture of fans calling for him to moisturize his skin.

Finally, he made his sponsorship with one video. It featured him applying CeraVe on his exaggeratedly long legs. The video ended with him spinning the product on his finger as he would with a ball, officially declaring him as the “New Face of Legs.”

Durant has endorsed brands such as Nike, Gatorade, and, controversially, online sportsbook FanDuel – nothing out of the ordinary for athletes nowadays. But never has he done so with lotions and moisturizers. Now, everything makes sense.

An ironic advertisement

A huge part of the appeal of Durant’s CeraVe endorsement was the irony of it all. In 2021, his ashy ankles went viral when a close-up picture of his legs vividly captured the details of his legs that seemed cracked and dry.

However, this was just the tip of the iceberg. In December 2025, Durant got candid about self-care on his teammate Fred VanVleet’s podcast. There, he admitted some hygiene habits that fans deemed diabolical, such as not getting regular haircuts, and yes, not lotioning his skin.

“I really used to care at one point. Then, after a while, I’m way more relaxed when I’m just not giving a f–k. So, I just stopped getting cuts. I stopped lotioning,” he explained.

But what astounded the fans was when he revealed his shower routine.

“I shower, but I might go two days, sometimes, without hopping in that water… I’m not saying after I work out I don’t take a shower,” Durant said. “If I’m sitting in the house, and ain’t got practice, I might just wanna go musty for a couple of days. I just like to feel close to the trenches like that.”

Ironic as it may seem for someone whose hygiene is not as impressive as his basketball, Durant is a businessman off the court. And with the right price, he is willing to do things for the products and companies he endorses at his own expense.

And to mock his ashy ankles for CeraVe, the right price happened to be $2 million.
