Draymond Green had a difficult night during the Golden State Warriors’ 121-110 loss to the Boston Celtics on Thursday, Feb. 19. The veteran forward went 0-of-7 from the field, ending the game with 0 points and just 2 rebounds and 3 assists. Green saw 18 minutes and 33 seconds of playing time during the game.

During a post-practice news conference, head coach Steve Kerr praised Green’s ability to remain positive despite his struggles, especially in how he continued to offer advice and support to his teammates. Kerr also noted that the coaching staff must continue to find ways of helping both Green and the entire roster find a better rhythm during games.

“I thought his approach last night was fantastic,” Kerr said. “I mean, it was a rough game for him. He kept his spirits up. He was talking to guys on the bench, giving advice. I’ve talked about this occasionally this year, but how you approach the latter stages of your career as a player is so important. And I think Draymond’s approach and attitude during this time, especially without Steph, where a lot of our weaknesses are exposed. He’s handling things with a lot of dignity and it’s not easy, especially when you have that kind of pride for being a great player. You have a night like that, it’s tough, and so it’s so important that he keeps his spirits up, like he did last night. But that we help him and we help the team, as a staff, develop a better rhythm, and that’s what we’re trying to do collectively.”

Green has played in 47 games so far this season. He’s averaging 8.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists, shooting 40.9% from the field and 32% from deep. Green’s tough shooting night against Boston is unlikely to impact his overall approach, especially as his value continued to come as a connector and elite defender.

Nevertheless, as Golden State continues to tread water without Stephen Curry, they will need Green to make a bigger impact, not necessarily as a scorer, but certainly as a playmaker.
