When asked recently about what he’s missed most since being out of the Boston Celtics lineup, Jayson Tatum didn’t hesitate.

“The fan engagement,” Tatum said. “Seeing all the fans in the stands with number 0 and all the Tatum jerseys on. It makes me feel really good … I often think about running back onto the court and hearing the fans scream.”

Tatum has made steady progress in his rehabilitation from the ruptured right Achilles tendon he suffered in Game 4 of the 2025 Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks. The injury, which occurred in May 2025, was followed by successful surgery within hours, and Tatum has followed a deliberate, structured recovery plan ever since.

By early February 2026, around the nine-month mark, Tatum began participating in controlled 5-on-5 scrimmages, initially with coaches and then in more structured settings. He was assigned to practice portions of a session with the Maine Celtics, the team’s G League affiliate, on February 9, marking a key on-court milestone as he ramped up activity under team supervision. Reports indicate he has aggressively pursued each phase of rehab, showing no major setbacks while building strength and conditioning.

Tatum reached the 40-week point in mid-February and shared positive sentiments about his progress, noting he feels stronger overall and continues to hit rehabilitation benchmarks.

Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla has provided measured updates, emphasizing a gradual approach focused on full readiness rather than a fixed schedule. Team president Brad Stevens has stressed that Tatum should only return when he is fully cleared and completely confident, with no pressure applied from the organization.

Tatum has stated that no specific return date is set, and nothing is finalized regarding a potential comeback this season. He continues daily work, evaluating how his body responds, while prioritizing complete physical and mental preparedness before considering game action. The Celtics have thrived in his absence, but his possible addition later in the campaign continues to generate discussion around the team.
