PHOENIX (AP) — Donovan Clingan had 23 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the Portland Trail Blazers past the shorthanded Phoenix Suns, 92-77, on Sunday night at Mortgage Matchup Center.
Jerami Grant also scored 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting for the Blazers, who rebounded from an ugly 157-103 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Friday.
Portland (28-30) has won five of its last seven games.
The Blazers built a 20-point lead late in the third quarter and settled for a 71-57 advantage heading into the fourth. Collin Gillespie hit two three-pointers to cut it to 80-69 with 7:36 left, but Grant responded with a three to end the treat.
Gillespie finished with 18 points and Jalen Green added 13, but they were the only Suns players who reached double-figures in scoring on a night Portland flexed its defense muscle.
One game after Denver bludgeoned the Blazers with 157 points on 57% shooting, they had a bounce-back effort. Phoenix finished with its lowest-scoring outing of the season and shot just 37% from the field, including 26% from three-point range.
It was a sloppy game for both teams — the Blazers coughed up 21 turnovers and the Suns had 19. And it was an especially sluggish first half.
Portland sported a 47-40 lead after two quarters, during which it held Phoenix (33-25) to just 11% shooting from three-point range (2 of 19). Grant led the Blazers with 12 points before the break.
It didn’t help that the Suns were missing a big chunk of their regular rotation, including All-Star guard Devin Booker (hip strain), forward Dillon Brooks (fractured hand), guard Grayson Allen (knee/ankle) and guard Jordan Goodwin (calf).
The four players are averaging more than 70 points per game combined.
Avdija leaves with injury
All-Star forward Deni Avdija left the game after just 59 seconds with a lower back injury and did not return.
Avdija was listed as questionable before the game, but decided to play. But he tweaked his back backing his way into the post in the opening minute and left the court immediately.
Avdija — who has been battling lower back issues for weeks — had missed 10 of 16 games before the All-Star break.
