SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga has landed one of the top players remaining in the transfer portal, though the move isn’t official just yet.

Grand Canyon guard/wing Tyon Grant-Foster announced his commitment to Gonzaga Wednesday morning on social media with an edit of him in a GU uniform. But the 6-foot-7, 220-pound senior will need a waiver from the NCAA for an additional year of eligibility.

“Amazing basketball situation,” Grant-Foster said to 247Sports.com‘s Eric Bossi about Gonzaga. “One of the best, if not the best, college coaches in the country. I know this is a place I can go get better in a real way and continue to win at a high level, and it’s been proven through their development of NBA-level wings.”

The 25-year-old is coming off two seasons at Grand Canyon, where he led both the Lopes and the Western Athletic Conference with 20.1 points per game in 2023-24. That year, he earned WAC Player of the Year and WAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors after guiding the Lopes to a conference tournament title and the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament win — a historic March Madness victory against Saint Mary’s at the Spokane Arena.

This past season, Grant-Foster’s numbers dipped. He averaged 14.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 39.9% from the field and 23.2% from 3-point range in 26 games.

Grant-Foster battled injury issues last season and has a history of serious medical setbacks.

The Kansas City native began his college career at the junior college level, starring at Indian Hills from 2018 to 2020. He earned NJCAA All-America honorable mention honors while averaging 16.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Grant-Foster transferred to Kansas for the 2020-21 season, appearing in 22 games for the Jayhawks while averaging 3.1 points and 2.2 rebounds in 8.2 minutes per contest.

After a brief stint with Kansas, he transferred to DePaul, where his career took a harrowing turn. In the Blue Demons’ 2021-22 season opener, Grant-Foster collapsed at halftime and was rushed to the hospital, where his heartbeat had to be shocked into rhythm three times. He underwent two heart surgeries and was told he would never play basketball again.

But he refused to accept that.

After about 16 months away from the game, Grant-Foster committed to Grand Canyon and returned to the court for the first time in two years in the Lopes’ 2023-24 season opener.

Following a standout 2023-24 season with GCU — finishing 19th nationally in total points (684) and ninth in free throws made (210) — Grant-Foster tested the NBA Draft process and was invited to the draft combine before announcing his return to Grand Canyon on June 4.

If granted another year of eligibility, Grant-Foster would give Gonzaga head coach Mark Few a proven scoring option and veteran presence.

He would also help offset the departures of guards Ryan Nembhard, Nolan Hickman and Khalif Battle.

Grant-Foster comes from a GCU program that added former Gonzaga guard Dusty Stromer this offseason after Stromer entered the portal.

He becomes the third transfer addition to Few’s 2025-26 roster, joining Arizona State guard Adam Miller, who committed in early May, and Virginia transfer Jalen Warley, who signed a financial aid agreement in January to join the Zags as a senior next season.
