On Wednesday evening, the BC men’s basketball team will host Wake Forest at Conte Forum for the penultimate home game of the season. It’s been a very bumpy ride for BC these past few weeks, as the Eagles currently are on an 8-game losing streak that dates back to late January. Wake is one of the most beatable teams left on BC’s schedule, other than their final match-up with Notre Dame, so this should be an opportunity to save some dignity before the season concludes.
The Demon Deacons are led by star sophomore forward Juke Harris, a do-it-all wing that can kill you in the paint, on the boards, or behind the arc. Harris is 3rd in the ACC in points per game and 15th in the nation, playing efficient basketball for a team that needs his offense. His upperclassmen co-stars Myles Colvin, Tre’Von Spillers, and Nate Calmese round out most of the minutes on the team, but none of them have the same scoring punch that Harris brings to the table.
Calmese is the point guard that runs the Deacs’ offense, pushing ball movement on the perimeter and often gets open for three-pointers when his teammates need to kick the ball back out. But driving to the paint isn;t exactly their specialty. The team lacks a big presence in the frontcourt, given that the tallest player on the roster is 6’9”. They are one of the worst in the nation at rebounding and they avoid taking shots inside the arc more than most ACC squads. Instead, Wake relies on the three-point shooting skills of their starting line-up to drive most of the offense, which has had mixed results.
The recipe for success for Boston College in this game should be to play physical defense at the perimeter and then bully the other team in the paint when BC is on offense. Despite how poorly BC has played as of late, this is actually a somewhat favorable match-up for the Eagles. If they’re good at anything, it’s pressuring ball-handlers, limiting ball movement, and forcing shooters off of the three-point line.
Prediction: Boston College 74 Wake Forest 72
