The Dallas Mavericks received encouraging news Thursday ahead of their home matchup against the Sacramento Kings, as Khris Middleton was upgraded to probable after exiting Tuesday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets with a right shoulder stinger.

Middleton went down in the second quarter in Brooklyn after taking contact from Nets center Nic Claxton. He was evaluated on the bench, returned to close out the half, then sat out the second half as a precaution. Dallas still closed out a 123–114 victory, but his early exit raised immediate questions about his availability moving forward.

The probable designation suggests the injury is minor, providing an important development for a team that has been operating with a shortened rotation for weeks.

Khris Middleton Settling Into Veteran Wing Role With Dallas Mavericks

In five games since joining the Mavericks, Middleton has looked like exactly the kind of veteran wing Dallas hoped to add.

He is averaging 14.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in 23.0 minutes per game while shooting 49% from the field and 88.9% from the line. His 55.1% effective field goal percentage reflects a player fitting into the flow of the offense rather than forcing touches. Before exiting Tuesday, he had recorded six points, five rebounds, one assist, and one steal in 12 minutes.

Across the full 2025–26 season, split between Washington and Dallas, he has appeared in 39 games and is averaging 10.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists on 44.1% shooting. With Brandon Williams, Naji Marshall, and Max Christie handling much of the downhill creation, Middleton has functioned as a stabilizer — reversing the ball, working from the mid-post, and keeping possessions organized without needing the offense to revolve around him.

That role has required constant communication in a group still finding its footing.

“It’s still communication — pretty much constantly throughout the game,” Middleton said. “Just trying to figure out where to be, where to go, where guys want it, things of that nature. We got a couple practices in over the All-Star break, but it’s still not training camp. It’s still not enough time to fully get to know one another.”

NBA Teams Monitoring Khris Middleton With March 1 Playoff Eligibility Deadline Approaching

Middleton’s status also carries some quiet league-wide relevance with the playoff eligibility waiver deadline approaching.

Teams around the NBA routinely monitor veteran situations at this point in the calendar will naturally keep an eye on Middleton. Under NBA rules, any player waived on or before March 1 can sign elsewhere and remain playoff-eligible; those waived after that date can join a new team but cannot appear in the postseason.

That setup reliably fuels speculation around established veterans. Middleton’s résumé — three All-Star selections and a 2021 championship — makes him the kind of player contenders would quickly evaluate if he became available. For now, the update is straightforward: he is trending toward playing Thursday and remains part of Dallas’ rotation plans.

Injury Notes on Cooper Flagg, P.J. Washington, and Daniel Gafford

Middleton’s availability matters even more given the number of injuries the Mavericks continue to deal with as the season continues. Cooper Flagg remains out with a left midfoot sprain. P.J. Washington will be sidelined with a left ankle sprain. Kyrie Irving and Dereck Lively II are both out for the season following surgeries. Daniel Gafford continues to be managed for a right ankle issue.

The value of experienced wings who can manage possessions and steady lineups has only increased for the Mavericks, and Middleton checks those boxes. His efficiency in half-court settings, where Dallas emphasizes paint touches, free throws, and quick ball movement, has provided needed structure during a stretch hit by roster fluctuation.

“Chris is a champion,” Kidd said. “He understands how to play. He doesn’t always have to score. His voice and his leadership are needed.”

Tipoff against the Kings is set for 7:30 p.m. CST at American Airlines Center.
