The Boston Celtics continue their walkdown of their cap expenditures this season with a move to bring back two wat guard John Tonje after the expiration of his 10-day contract, according to recent reporting from senior HoopsHype reporter Michael Scotto. The move will help the Celtics front office stay abreast of the NBA rules for minimum roster size after a series of moves starting in the 2025 offseason which were resumed ahead of the 2026 trade deadline to shrink the cap hit of the Celtics from deep into the luxury tax as a repeater ball club to below the tax entirely.

But in order to remain with a roster in compliance with those aforementioned rules, Boston has had to use some very specific signings (including both Tonje and Celtics alum Dalano Banton) to keep their roster spending under the limit required (for more details on how and why Boston did this, check out this episode of “Havlicek Stole the Pod” with Third Apron cap guru Yossi Gozlan).

In his limited appearances for Boston in his 10-day contract over the course of just 2 games, Tonje put up 1.0 points and as many rebounds per game,
