The Boston Celtics signed Wisconsin basketball great John Tonje to a two-way contract on Sunday.
Tonje will return to the organization’s G League affiliate, the Maine Celtics, after a brief stint with the NBA club. The Badger great appeared in one game during his 10-day contract, playing four total minutes and failing to score a point.
Tonje began his NBA career with the Utah Jazz, who picked him in the second round of the 2025 NBA draft. He excelled in 32 games for the Jazz’s G League affiliate to start the year, averaging 18 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists in more than 30 minutes of action per night. Tonje then continued that strong form with the Maine Celtics after he was traded from Utah to Boston during February’s trade deadline, averaging 25 points and 5 1/2 rebounds across two appearances.
While he was unable to translate that production on an NBA court, another stint with the NBA Celtics is likely if the former All-American continues his strong G League play.
