Cavaliers surprise shoppers by paying grocery bills at Giant Eagle

  • March 5, 2026

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Imagine going to the grocery store and leaving with your bill completely paid.

That’s what happened to several shoppers at Giant Eagle on West 117th when some of the Cavaliers surprised them by quietly covering their grocery bills at checkout.

For many families, it was a moment that turned an ordinary errand into something unforgettable.

One shopper said they couldn’t believe it at first, thinking it had to be some kind of mistake.

“It’s crazy,” said Brandon Cubes, a West 117th native. “I come here all the time. It’s just like I see Tyrese Proctor walking around, and I’m like looking around and then I see Jalen Tyson. Like how crazy is that, that they would be here today? But hey, they blessed up. They blessed us. They’re doing great. So, we just appreciate our family here, guys.”

Jaylon Tyson and Tyrese Proctor moved from register to register, greeting fans, taking photos, and thanking the community for their support.

Moments like this show that sometimes the biggest assists don’t happen on the basketball court, they happen in the community.

“I love giving back,” said Proctor. “My family is big on giving back. I’m trying to do as much as I can back home… and being over here is obviously tough because I can’t go back home a lot, but just getting familiar with the Cleveland community and just doing everything I can to help give back. And being a professional athlete comes with a lot, but I think always just knowing where you come from and giving back to people is a big thing.”

For some fans, the moment made the athletes feel less like celebrities and more like everyday people.

“The fact that they’re spending their time here bagging groceries, taking pictures and talking to people, that’s like, I don’t know, it makes them more human,” said Ashley Neuman, Giant Eagle shopper. “It makes it very relatable and that just makes you feel the more connected to them.

For the Cavaliers, it was a chance to give back to the fans who support them every single night.

And for the shoppers inside Giant Eagle, it was a reminder that kindness can show up when you least expect it, even in the checkout line.

“It was definitely a fun experience and to see the smiles on their face, the kids, everything, it’s a blessing for sure,” said Tyson. “Everybody isn’t blessed like this, so to be able to be able to be in a position to bless them is something that I don’t take for granted. To see them, their emotions, like I try not to get emotional about it because I can only imagine what they’re going through.

From the hardwood to the grocery aisles, the Cavs proved that a small act of generosity can make a big impact.
