At the Big 12 spring meetings being held in Orlando, NCAA President Charlie Baker discussed the possibility of expanding the NCAA basketball tournament. Currently, the NCAA Tournament features 68 teams but, could grow as soon next season.“Expansion could come next year,” said Baker. “That would be the goal. Yeah. To try and do this, for next year. Which is why the window to actually negotiate, will probably end sometime early summer.”The goal would be to grow the tournament to either 72 or 76 teams. There would still be 34 automatic qualifiers going to teams that win their conference tournament. “We’ve been talking about 72 and 76,” said Baker. “Those have been the numbers the basketball committee has talked about. It would obviously be one or the other, it won’t be more.”The NCAA has been in negotiations with its broadcast partners and Baker said those talks have been “good.”If the expansion does happen, it will be the seventh time the tournament has added more teams. Most recently came in 2011 when the field went from 64 to 68 by adding the “First Four.”
