The ACC shifted its men’s basketball tournament schedule to feature Duke and North Carolina on television.
For years, the ACC’s No. 1 seed has played during the early session in the quarterfinals, giving it more rest before the semifinals.
The conference said earlier this year that it wouldn’t use a pre-determined schedule, but instead would set it after the field was set. With top-ranked Duke claiming the No. 1 seed and UNC securing the No. 4 seed, the league released the tournament schedule Thursday.
Virginia has clinched the No. 2 seed, while Miami has secured the No. 3 seed. The rest of the seeds in the 15-team event haven’t been clinched with one game remaining in the regular season. Georgia Tech has been eliminated, one of three schools that won’t make the field.
The Blue Devils and Tar Heels are the conference’s historic powers and biggest television draws. If each were to advance through the quarterfinals, they would meet for a third time this season in the semifinals. The tournament begins Tuesday at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte.
UNC handed Duke its lone conference loss earlier this year. The teams play Saturday night in Durham in the regular-season finale for both teams.
There is a benefit to both schools of playing later in the tournament: The ACC now distributes part of its television revenue to teams based on viewership.
