CAMDEN, N.J. — Versatility is hugely important in today’s NBA as it is a big advantage to have players who can play multiple positions and do a variety of things. The Philadelphia 76ers have that advantage in the form of 5-year forward Trendon Watford.
Signed in the offseason to a deal, Watford is averaging 6.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 39 games as he has battled injuries in his first season in Philadelphia. He has had to play a ton of roles in the 2025-26 season whether it be the backup power forward, backup small forward, handling the ball and running offense, or playing out of the post, Watford has done it all.
“I mean, just try to go along with it,” Watford said at practice on Friday. “I think that’s not a bad thing being able to play a lot of positions. Some games I might come in at the 4, back up 4, some games I might come in at the 1. Some games I might come in at the get Kelly at the 3. So, it varies, and, obviously, it’s a good thing to be able to play a lot of positions, but my job is to just stay locked in and be ready whenever my name is called. Whatever position it may be.”
As the Sixers go through their prep work for teams, everybody has an idea of what is expected of them, but for somebody like Watford, his role may be one thing the day before the game, but then completely change by the time tip off comes around. It is something he has to be ready and locked in for.
“We go through our prep and stuff, and I know where I’m playing that and playing behind, or whatever it may be, but it varies,” explained Watford. “It could be totally different tomorrow, and I’ll be ready for whatever it is, though.”

The goal for Watford is always the same and that’s to be locked in and help the Sixers grow and win games. That is going to remain the case even now as Philadelphia heads into these final 20 games looking to lock down a playoff spot.
“Just try to stay, like I said, stay locked in and just sort of stay true to myself, and just be who I am, just as a player,” Watford finished. “Regardless of position, regardless of the minutes. I mean, whatever it is, just try to be who I am when I’m out there, be the connector the team needs, and just try to be there for the team, and be aggressive.”
