BOSTON (WGME) – It was a big night for basketball fans across the region as Mainer Cooper Flagg made his TD Garden debut against the Celtics in Boston Friday night.
The 19-year-old prodigy from Newport and life-long Celtics fan came home to New England in a Dallas Mavericks uniform.
This game was circled on Mainers’ calendars since the NBA schedule came out, and it did not disappoint.
Starting with the Celtics, star forward Jayson Tatum made his season debut Friday night.
He’s coming off an Achilles injury he sustained last May during a playoff series against the New York Knicks.
In his debut Friday night, he had 15 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists.
On the other side of the ball, Flagg returned to Boston for the first time since being drafted to the Dallas Mavericks.
Flagg is also coming off an injury himself. He injured his foot last month.
He returned to the lineup Thursday night against the Orlando Magic, putting up 18 points.
Friday night, he had 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
“Had a lot of people from back home, to have experience was really cool, and the energy was incredible tonight, obviously,” Flag said. “This is a place I used to come to and got to watch, so I think it’s going to be incredibly fun throughout my career to be able to play in front of this crowd.”
Fans came from all across Maine Friday night to see him play in Beantown.
