The Philadelphia 76ers are dealing with the aftermath of an unfortunate hand injury to Tyrese Maxey towards the end of a 125-116 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. Maxey collided with teammate Adem Bona while going after a loose ball with 16 seconds left in the game and he was in obvious pain after the play.
He slid to the sidelines to try and get off the floor and he had his hand in his waistband as he was walking to the locker room. He did not get any testing done after the game, but he will get it done on Sunday before Philadelphia faces the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday to conclude a quick 2-game road trip.
With that being said, the Sixers can ill afford to lose Maxey. With Paul George still suspended for another nine games, Joel Embiid currently dealing with a right oblique strain, and VJ Edgecombe dealing with a lumbar contusion, the Sixers need Maxey to be on the floor. He is that important to this group.
“He’s a constant for us,” Kelly Oubre Jr. told reporters after the loss. “He battles every night. He comes in, does his work, kind of sets, you know, leads by example. Yeah, he’s definitely a catalyst to our success. So, I think the world of them. I think we do, too, as a team.”
Maxey has missed only two games all season for Philadelphia and that was due to an illness back in December. He has battled to make sure he is available for this group on a nightly basis and if the Sixers can’t have him for a bit, then they are going to need others to step up in a big way down the stretch of the season and keep them in the playoff race.
