CLEVELAND — Last year, as the regular season was winding down, the Cavaliers learned a valuable lesson about not looking ahead too much into one potential playoff opponent.
Last season’s Cavs were so focused on preparing to try to beat the Boston Celtics in a playoff series that they were, in a way, blindsided by the Indiana Pacers on their own run to the NBA Finals.

“Last year we were thinking Boston, Boston, Boston — and we get Indiana,” Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson said recently. “It’s a mistake to just focus on one team because the roulette wheel could just drop on another team.”
The Cavs won’t make that same error twice. But those same Celtics delivered a new lesson in a March 8 beatdown at Rocket Arena that showed they are still “the standard” in the East when healthy.

In Jayson Tatum’s second game back from an Achilles injury that had many around the league thinking he’d be out for several additional months, the Celtics controlled and bullied Cleveland for 48 minutes in a 109-98 win.
The Cavs are still being taken to school by big, bad Boston.

“I told everybody [in the locker room], that’s the standard right there,” said James Harden. “That’s the standard. … My 10th or 11th game here, that’s the level that we gotta get to — Boston.”
The Cavs had one of their worst shooting performances of the season, which included a 10-point second quarter. They had plenty of open looks, but nothing fell. They also cut what was once a 26-point Boston lead down to eight points in the fourth quarter, but they’re well past the time for moral victories.
Cavs playoff outlook, standing in East
The Cavs can look at it as just another game during an 82-game regular season, which is fair to a large extent. They’re also now 0-3 against the Celtics this season, and they’re seeing some trends that need reversed.

“It seems like we, with this team, we get down in a hole, right?” Atkinson after the game. “It seems like a theme playing them so that’s a bit concerning. Got to do better.”
Atkinson acknowledged before the game the Celtics remain a difficult matchup “for anybody.” Tatum returning to the lineup likely makes Boston the slight favorite in the East yet again, with the Cavs, New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons creating a pretty clear top four.
Even with Tatum out, though, Boston remained a top-four squad in the conference. Jaylen Brown is a star. Payton Pritchard is among the most underrated players in the league. Derrick White might fit that description to an even better extent, as Atkinson noted March 8 that, at least by the analytical metrics, White rates as arguably a top-five NBA player, given his value on both sides of the floor.
Then the Celtics have had a number of players step into larger roles when needed, including Neemias Queta, Hugo Gonzalez, Sam Hauser, Baylor Scheierman and others. It’s why Atkinson said he never bought into the idea that Boston would fall off the face of the Earth without Tatum. But now that he’s back, a talented roster has essentially added a star-level contributor.

“They got a championship pedigree, right?” Atkinson said. “This is another level. This is an elite, elite team, one of the elites in the league. You talk about [how] we have to prove, we have to prove, we got a lot to prove — this is part of it, getting over the hump.”
Eighteen games remain for the Cavs before they’ll embark on another playoff run they hope lasts much longer than the last few. Harden said he’s confident they’ll round into form by then. Donovan Mitchell said they have the right amount of urgency regarding the Celtics, even if there’s still work to do.
“We understand there are so many little details,” Mitchell said. “The best thing is we’re back healthy, right? Like, go from there and our sense of urgency’s at an all-time high. We’ve talked about it. … We’ve got to go ahead and be elite in order to do what we want to do.”
