MILWAUKEE, Wis. — At just 24 years old, Jalen Johnson has already carved out a place among the greatest basketball players ever to come out of the Madison area. His journey, from local standout to NBA All-Star, has been defined not only by his talent but by a steady commitment to representing where he comes from.
This season, his fifth in the league, has been his true breakout. The Atlanta Hawks went all in on Johnson, effectively naming him a franchise cornerstone. A few weeks later, he validated that faith on the biggest regular-season stage in basketball: his first NBA All-Star Game.
In the midst of that rise, Johnson’s path brought him back closer to where it all started. When the Hawks faced the Milwaukee Bucks last week, Wisconsin was more than just another stop on the schedule – it was a reminder of the people and places that shaped him. Even as an emerging star in a major market, Johnson keeps his home state at the center of his heart.
“Most importantly, I just want to show everybody in the world that, you know, Wisconsin’s on the map for basketball,” Johnson said. “A lot of times, at least I growing up, I felt like Wisconsin was always overlooked.”
He might be the only current NBA player from the Madison area, but Johnson is part of a historic wave of talent coming out of the Dairyland. Between Tyler Herro, Tyrese Haliburton, Kon Knueppel, and Johnson himself, Wisconsin basketball has never had stronger representation at the sport’s highest level. For Johnson, that surge of talent is more than a coincidence – it’s a statement.
“As far as talent-wise, I always felt like we were one of the states that were always very underrated,” he said. “And just for me to continue to put us on the map, and along with the other guys in the NBA as well, I feel like we’re doing a good job. And we continue to wear that badge of honor.”
From packed gyms in Sun Prairie to the bright lights of the NBA All-Star Game, Jalen Johnson’s rise is changing how the basketball world sees Wisconsin. And as his star grows, so does the message he’s determined to send: Wisconsin isn’t just on the map – it belongs in the conversation.
