Last week, Sun Life U.S. and the Boston Celtics held the 12th annual Fit to Win youth program according to a release circulated by the team. The event was designed to engage children in fitness and healthy lifestyle activities, and ended last Thursday with a nutrition-themed event where Celtics players Hugo Gonzalez, Derrick White, and Amari Williams took part along with local children in a competition focused on creating smoothies and cereal bars.
In collaboration with the YMCA of Greater Boston, the Fit to Win program was designed to promote the tracking of health activities, including workouts, journaling, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep. This year’s event started in February at the Fit to Win Health Fair at the East Boston YMCA. It provided local youth with opportunities for creative writing, selecting fruits and vegetables to take home, vision screenings, smoothie tasting, vegan cuisine, and demonstrations on flossing and brushing teeth, among other activities.
Children aged 8 to 12 from the YMCAs of Dorchester, East Boston, and Roxbury also participated in workouts led by Celtics legend Leon Powe and enjoyed a dunk show featuring Lucky the Leprechaun and his team, according to the release. Additionally, two children were gifted tickets to an upcoming Celtics game as part of a giveaway event.
“Since the start of this program over a decade ago, we have seen so many children embrace new experiences in healthy living,” said Sun Life US President David Healy. “We are fortunate to have such a great partnership with the Celtics, that allows us to make an impact in the communities around Boston that need it most. Learning healthy habits at an early age is the first step to using healthy habits throughout your life.”
“We’re grateful for the collaboration with Sun Life and the YMCA of Greater Boston, and the positive impact it continues to have across our community,” offered Celtics Chief Partnership Officer Ted Dalton. “Bringing kids together with Celtics players in a setting that promotes healthy, active lifestyles is a meaningful way to reinforce habits that can last a lifetime.”
