With just days left until Selection Sunday and March Madness, it’s crunch time in conference tournaments around the country.
Arizona stands above the rest of the Big 12 after winning the regular season title and appears to be a lock for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Wildcats went 29-2 this season and the two games they dropped came in early February against Kansas and Texas Tech — two very good teams that could make March Madness runs of their own.

That said, of all the major conference tournaments this week, this one feels the most wide open. Beyond Arizona, Kansas and Texas Tech, perennial contender Houston has another stacked team. The Cougars went 26-5 and have repeatedly looked capable of making another Final Four run under Kelvin Sampson. No. 7-ranked Iowa State should be in the mix as well.

Texas Tech was a national title contender with a healthy JT Toppin. Now, the Red Raiders look far from a Final Four team.
Tech is still very good; but there are hardly any teams that can withstand the loss of their All-American best player and still be a credible national title threat.

Joshua Jefferson hits 1,000 career points at Iowa State, and more importantly he’s taking this game over with a game-high 15 points to go with 11 rebounds so far.

The Cyclones feel like a fairly solid No. 3 seed, but could even move up to the No. 2 line if they win the Big 12 tournament.
Kansas City would be a fan of that. Iowa State and Kansas are by far the two strongest fanbases every year at the Big 12 tournament and they’re on opposite sides of the bracket. A Saturday matchup in the championship game would be electric.

The Red Raiders started the game off and had a 17-5 lead early, but the Cyclones settled in after that.
Jamarion Batemon drilled a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to give Iowa State the halftime lead.
TTU’s LeJuan Watts leads all players at the break with 11 and teammate Chrisian Anderson has 10. Tamin Lipsey leads the Cyclones with 10.

The Cyclones are right back in the game after a flurry and took the lead on a 3-ball from Tamin Lipsey. He has 8 points and Joshua Jefferson has 7 for Iowa State.

The Red Raiders’ suffocating defense is already causing the Cyclones problems. Iowa State has made just two of its first 10 shots and Texas Tech is out to a 17-5 lead in the early minutes.

For Iowa State’s part, the Cyclones have won two straight after Wednesday’s 91-42 blowout of Arizona State, but they’re on a bit of a slide. They’ve dropped three of their last six games, including one at home against Tech.
That said, they’re still looking at a 3 seed or possibly even a 2 seed if they make a run in the Big 12 tourney.

Christian Anderson and Donovan Atwell have been shouldering the scoring load for the Red Raiders since JT Toppin’s injury.
Here’s how the stat sheet has broken down for Texas Tech:

Since losing JT Toppin, the Red Raiders are 3-2. In addition to the Iowa State win, they also beat Cincinnati and Kansas State.
But they’ve lost their last two games coming into the Big 12 tourney, against TCU at home and BYU on the road.

For the sake of the Big 12 tournament though, this is the No. 4 Red Raiders taking on the No. 5 Cyclones.
The two teams have only played each other once this season and it was recent. Texas Tech went into Ames and delivered an impressive 82-73 road win on Feb. 28. The Red Raiders had six players in double figures in that win, which has kind of been the theme for them since star JT Toppin went down with a season-ending injury on Feb. 17.
