The Portland Trail Blazers often struggle when they play lethargic basketball. Thankfully, they benefit from Sidy Cissoko‘s energy, which has become a vital part of their system. He is the Blazers’ spark plug and is a crucial piece within acting head coach Tiago Splitter’s rotations.

Sidy Cissoko Has Proven To Be The Trail Blazers’ Spark Plug

During the 2025-26 NBA season, the Portland Trail Blazers have found their identity in their quest for a postseason spot. They want to play energetic basketball by speeding up the game on both ends of the floor. With players like Scoot Henderson and Deni Avdija, they have pace-setters on offense.

On the other end of the floor, they also have players who can pick up the pace. Within the roster, Cissoko is the Blazers’ spark plug, the player who gets everybody else going. He plays with a unique energy that can be infectious for the other players on the roster.

Cissoko’s Energy Motivates The Rest Of The Roster

Portland is not an elite team by any means, especially with their struggles this season. Among those issues is that they tend to have dips in energy from time to time. That is when players like Cissoko and Blake Wesley enter because they fundamentally change the game.

“I always play the same since I got here. Just bring that fire every time with me, keep the same Sidy from the beginning of the season. I love this sport so much that I have to bring that, have to be there on the court. I have to be aggressive all the time,” Cissoko said after the game on Friday.

Against the Utah Jazz on Friday, Cissoko was an important player. The Trail Blazers were floundering early in the game as they were down big. With Cissoko entering the game, he brought the energy they needed. The rest of the team woke up as they came back and won the game.

That would not have been possible if Cissoko had not entered the game. He is truly the Blazers’ spark, which Splitter noted afterwards. Considering he only had a two-way contract for the first half of the season, that has motivated him. If a player like him is playing 100% in every play, that will galvanize the rest of the team.

Most people might think there is an overlap between the positions of Cissoko, Kris Murray, and Toumani Camara. They all play similar roles as the lengthy wing players who play intense full-court defense. All three players succeed there, with Camara being the player with high expectations.

Cissoko might be the player who entered the season with the least expectations of the three. However, he has played himself into being one of the most impactful players in Splitter’s rotations. Cissoko’s energy is infectious for the rest of the team.

Every time he enters the court, there is an energy shift for Portland. He speeds up the opponents with his high-pressure defense. Offensively, he is always running to cut into the paint or set impressive screens. The Frenchman will always be fighting for loose balls and offensive rebounds as well.

He is the type of player that any team would love to have. Thankfully for Portland, they have him on a good contract. Cissoko has a converted two-way contract, so he will be ready to keep fighting for the foreseeable future.

Splitter’s Rotations Need More Energetic Players

Within Splitter’s system, there are many standout players and some glue guys. Among the standouts are Avdija, Donovan Clingan, and Shaedon Sharpe, who are the featured players. Every time they are on the floor, the spotlight is on them to perform.

The other side is the glue guys, which includes Camara, Murray, Cissoko, and Wesley. They certainly make a big impact within Splitter’s rotations by playing their roles. Cissoko and Wesley know they have to bring the energy to switch up the game’s dynamics.

With Cissoko in particular, he knows he has to be the Blazers’ spark. He is talented and has an unmatched motor for Portland. Splitter will keep relying on him because he plays a good role off the bench, and he is an underrated game-changer.
