The UMBC Retrievers men’s basketball team is dancing!
They are headed back to the NCAA tournament after knocking off the Vermont Catamounts in the America East Championship with a 74-59 victory on Saturday at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena in Baltimore County.
This is the third time in the team’s history they are headed into March Madness after punching a ticket to the NCAA tournament.
The victory marked UMBC’s third win over Vermont this season and secured the conference’s automatic bid, capping a dominant 16-2 run through league play.
UMBC entered the title game as one of the hottest teams in the conference, riding a 10-game winning streak and outscoring opponents by nine points per game on the season.
The Retrievers averaged more than 76 points per contest and leaned on their perimeter shooting and balanced scoring attack. Vermont, which finished 14-4 in America East play, came in averaging nearly 74 points per game and had won eight of its last 10, setting up a matchup between the league’s two most consistent programs.
