PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers played host to the lowly Brooklyn Nets on Saturday afternoon needing to get back in the win column following a tough loss in the Motor City on Thursday. The Sixers continued to be undermanned as Jabari Walker joined the list of Sixers out for this contest, but the Nets didn’t offer up much resistance in this one.
The Sixers led by as many as 28 before seeing that lead slip away. Philadelphia had to dig deep and rally for a much-needed 104-97 win over the Nets. While Philadelphia was number of key pieces, Brooklyn was down big man Nic Claxton as well as Michael Porter Jr., Egor Demin, and others in this contest, but the Nets took their one and only lead of the day with 3:23 left in the fourth when they had a big rally.
The Sixers received big efforts from a number of players as Justin Edwards had 19 points, three steals, and two blocks and VJ Edgecombe had 16 points and seven assists. Quentin Grimes actually led the way with 28 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, Adem Bona had nine points and 10 boards along with four blocks, and Dominick Barlow had 10 and eight rebounds.
Here are the player grades following the win:
VJ Edgecombe: A
It was so very obvious from the jump in this one that Edgecombe was the best player on the floor in this one. He used his quickness and size to get to the basket and finish up and over plenty of Nets defenders and it was clear that Brooklyn had zero answer on who to put on him to try and slow him down. He was getting to his spots all afternoon and when the Nets did offer up any resistance, he did a good job of making moves with his passing to set his teammates up for easy buckets. It was a nice bounce back effort for him after the struggles in Detroit.

After a tough night in Detroit on Thursday, Grimes was able to get going early in this one. He knocked down a 3 at the top of the key and had a nice drive to the basket while also being helpful on the glass. Overall, Grimes was able to knock down key shots to give the Sixers some production on both ends as he was a productive player in a number of areas. The shots he made in the fourth were paramount for Philadelphia holding off the Nets and winning this game. It looked like it was going to be a disheartening loss for the Sixers, but Grimes stepped up in a big way.
Justin Edwards: A
If the Sixers are going to continue to get this version of Edwards, then they are going to be in excellent shape. The second-year forward was all over the place on the defensive end and disrupted any type of schemes the Nets tried to run in this one. He was excellent in terms of being able to force turnovers and set the tone on that end of the floor. He also had some tough finishes at the basket which is a good sign for him as he continues to find his rhythm again.
Dominick Barlow: A-minus
With the Nets employing a smaller lineup, Barlow was able to have a solid start. He was helpful on the glass, had a couple of nice finishes around the basket, and made some nice plays with his passing. He was also a presence on the defensive end as his work on that end made an impact. This is the type of performance that Barlow will have to give to keep the Sixers afloat.
Adem Bona: A
This was the perfect matchup for Bona due to the fact that the Nets don’t offer up much size. It allowed Bona to be able to have some great moments in the paint and be impactful on the glass. He also did a great job when he had to switch onto perimeter ball-handlers. He moved his feet well and contested every look in the paint for Brooklyn. He had some really impressive blocks in this one as he continues to grow in that area of his game.
Trendon Watford: B-plus
There were quite a few actions in this one that included with Watford working out of the post and being able to find his rhythm. He used his size and strength to muscle his way in for easy buckets while also being able to identify the double teams the Nets sent and making the correct reads out of it for a couple of buckets. There were some defensive issues, but Watford had a nice night against his former Nets team in this one.
Cam Payne: A
The initial run for Payne was helpful as he knocked down a couple of 3s in the early going. Especially, in the second quarter when the offense bogged down a bit. The energy Payne continues to play with is a big help for this group and the Sixers will take what he gave in this one on a nightly basis.
Dalen Terry: B
Terry wasn’t able to get much going with his offense in this one, but he was outstanding defensively. He was terrific out on the perimeter and gave the Sixers a real presence on that end as he bothered Brooklyn’s ball-handlers and forced them into tougher looks. He took a hard fall in the second quarter, but was then able to bounce back with a bucket in the paint.
MarJon Beauchamp: B
The Sixers received a good run from Beauchamp. He moved his feet well on the perimeter defensively and gave Philadelphia another presence on that end. He didn’t have a big offensive impact, but he made his presence felt on defense.
