Alabama men’s basketball player Aden Holloway was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree possession of marijuana, according to a spokesperson for the local Tuscaloosa Police Department.
According to Bama247’s Mike Rodak, Alabama coach Nate Oats said Monday on his radio show that the Crimson Tide were preparing to play without Holloway entering the NCAA Tournament.
“The University is aware of the allegations and is working to gather more information,” the school said in a statement. “The student has been removed from campus pending further investigation by the UA Office of Student Conduct.”
Tuscaloosa police said agents for the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force searched a residence Monday morning and found more than a pound of marijuana, paraphernalia and cash. Holloway, 21, was also charged with failure to affix a tax stamp. State law requires tax stamps to be purchased and affixed to marijuana and other controlled substances that are subject to taxation. Marijuana is legal only for medical use in Alabama. Both charges are felonies in the state of Alabama. He was arrested and taken to Tuscaloosa County jail, where bond was set at $5,000.
Alabama earned a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament’s Midwest Regional and faces No. 13 Hofstra on Friday afternoon in Tampa, Fla.
Holloway, a 6-foot-1 junior guard from Charlotte, is in his second season with the Crimson Tide, where he transferred after his freshman season at Auburn. He started 27 games for Alabama this season and is the team’s second-leading scorer at 16.8 points per game.
