Huskies not satisfied yet, play in first-ever NCAA Elite Eight Wednesday

  • March 24, 2026

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) – Michigan Tech men’s basketball is playing in the program’s first-ever NCAA Elite Eight Wednesday. The Huskies are on the prowl for more after the accomplishment.

“We don’t want to be satisfied,” head coach Josh Buettner said. “We’re not going down there just for the experience. We’re going down there to try to win a game or two.”

“Jobs not over,” senior guard Marcus Tomashek said. “We can go win a few more games here, and our goal is to get as far as we can.”

Tech was tabbed as the six-seed in the Elite Eight after toppling Walsh on its home floor in the Sweet 16 last Tuesday. The Huskies were matched up with third-seeded Gannon.

“It’s not anything new for us,” freshman guard Jesse Napgezek said. “So just treat it as another nonconference game, play our hardest, and see what happens.”

“Gannon is another team that presses,” Tomashek said. “We’ve had experience with that this year quite a bit.”

“The last four games we’ve seen 40 minutes of press for sure, so we’ve seen a ton of pressure,” Buettner said.

Taking care of the basketball will be paramount with the defensive pressure the Huskies anticipate seeing Wednesday.

“That turnover number is going to be the biggest number of the game,” Buettner said. “If we get a good shot down the court and get a chance to get back and make them execute in the half court, I feel we’ll be in a pretty good spot.”

Tech’s seniors are proud of taking a team that won 10 games their freshmen year and turning it into one that’s matched a program record of 29 wins this season no matter the outcome this week.

“Just shows that we stuck together, worked hard and just pushed through all the lows and got here now,” Tomashek said.

The Huskies tip off against the Golden Knights at 12 p.m. ET Wednesday. The game is available to stream for free on NCAA.com.
