Los Angeles Lakers winning streak ends at nine games as they fell to the Detroit Pistons in a close 113-110 matchup

For the first time in 18 days, the Los Angeles Lakers lost a game.

In a back-and-forth matchup, the Lakers fell to the Detroit Pistons yesterday, 113-110 at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, ending Los Angeles’ nine-game win streak. Guard Luka Dončić led both teams in scoring with 32 points.

“We’re a good basketball team,” Head Coach JJ Redick said. “I believe that we’re a good basketball team. I thought we could be a good basketball team the entire season. We saw flashes of it. We saw short stretches of it, but we’re a good basketball team.”

Los Angeles got off to a slow start in the game, as they entered halftime down 65-52. Guard Austin Reaves had eight points and forward LeBron James was scoreless in the first half.

Coming out of halftime, though, the Lakers looked more like the team that had just won nine straight games. With a little under six minutes left in the third, James made his first shot of the night — a 3-pointer — before Reaves made a 3-pointer of his own and James’ layup made the score 81-75. Dončić scored five straight points to tie the game 87-87 with 32.9 seconds in the third.

“There were a couple games where we got down; a couple games that we got up, teams made a run, took leads and we were able to stay resilient and come back,” James said. “So we’re a tough-minded [team]. Even with tonight, we got down again versus a very good team on their home floor. Obviously they had probably been waiting on this matchup.”

The Pistons remained a few points ahead for most of the fourth quarter before the Lakers tied it 105-105 with 2:39 left. Two minutes later, center Deandre Ayton went to the line and shot two free throws to give the Lakers a 108-107 lead.

The Pistons scored again, but Reaves continued his big second half — where he had 16 points — with a jumpshot to put the Lakers back ahead.

Pistons guard Dannis Jenkins responded with a jump shot, but when the Lakers got the ball back, Dončić missed a jump shot and Detroit rebounded. Jenkins went to the free-throw line and made both to put Detroit up 113-110.

With the final shot, the Lakers first called a timeout, then turned to Dončić, who threw up a 33-foot 3-point shot that clanked off the rim as time ran out, securing the loss for the Lakers.

Los Angeles’ next game is tomorrow against the Indiana Pacers in Indiana.
