Following North Carolina men’s basketball’s NCAA Tournament first-round loss to VCU last Thursday, head coach Hubert Davis’ future with the program is uncertain, according to The Athletic and other national outlets.

The Tar Heels, who were up by 19 points with over 7 1/2 minutes to play, completely collapsed. VCU was able to chip away at the lead to force overtime and complete the largest comeback in NCAA Tournament first round history.

Davis’ decision to switch to just a six- man rotation in the second half proved costly. Players looked tired late in the second and overtime, despite assertions after the game that they weren’t. The lack of in-game changes has been a theme of Davis’ tenure and is concerning for a coach at a Blue Blood.

After the VCU game, questions about his future were raised. According to TarHeel247, should Davis return next year, there would be less donor support than this year. North Carolina spent more than $14 million on this year’s roster.

On Sunday afternoon, Jones Angell — UNC’s play-by-play announcer for Tar Heel Sports Network — announced that the “Hubert Davis Live!” radio show scheduled for Monday had been postponed. It was slated to be the last show of the year.

Then, reports from WRAL surfaced on Monday afternoon that previously scheduled player meetings for this week — that were supposed to begin Tuesday — had also been postponed.

In his fifth season at the helm of UNC basketball, Davis led the Tar Heels to a 24-9 record, including 18-0 at home and a fourth place finish in the ACC. North Carolina was one-and-done in both the ACC and NCAA tournaments. It was the second straight year that the Tar Heels haven’t made it past the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

After first-year forward Caleb Wilson’s season ending injury, North Carolina went 0-3 with losses to Duke, Clemson and VCU. Almost any team would struggle without a projected top 5 NBA Draft pick and that will likely be considered.

Davis has compiled a 125-54 record over the past five seasons. In his first year, he took No. 8 seeded North Carolina to the national title game but hasn’t made it past the Sweet 16 since.

And while there hasn’t been an official announcement from North Carolina about the future of the program, all signs point to a coaching change in Chapel Hill. If it happens, the head coaching job would be the best available job in the country.
