CLEVELAND — The Cavaliers need Evan Mobley to heed the same message that Peter Parker received from Uncle Ben.
Donovan Mitchell goes by Spida, but the Cavs are trying to get Mobley to take a page out of Spiderman’s book.

Cleveland’s defense has slipped as of late, which led to Kenny Atkinson sounding some alarm bells after the Cavs’ game against the Orlando Magic March 24. They won that game, but zooming out to the big picture, the defensive effort left much to be desired, and Atkinson wasn’t pleased with them allowing 131 points.
The Cavs then lost to the Miami Heat the next night while giving up 120 points. With only nine games to go, fixing their defense has become priority No. 1.
One major element of it all is their desire for Mobley to become a vocal leader on that end of the floor. He is the reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year, after all. He certainly has the green light to sound off whenever he can. But, to a large degree, it’s simply not in his nature, and the Cavs know that about their soft-spoken award winner.
But Atkinson has encouraged Mobley to hold court on the court more often.

“My coach in college used to say, with talent comes responsibility,” Atkinson said, somewhat referring to the Spiderman line connecting great power and great responsibility. “He’s made huge strides in terms of his communication, holding guys accountable. He yelled at Donovan last night for not boxing out. He would have never done that last year.”

Cavs look to Evan Mobley on defense with Jarrett Allen sidelined
When Mobley does speak, everybody listens. Atkinson noted that 100 percent of the time when Mobley says something about a defensive question, he’s right.
Even while being chastised for a play, Donovan Mitchell loves to hear it. He’s been on Mobley to be more vocal for quite some time, even if it’s directed at him. Once a player has a Defensive Player of the Year line on his resume, the floor is always his to speak up.

“I mean, he’s continuing to find himself,” Mitchell said. “And he’s right, you know, when he speaks. … I’ve been telling him this for years, but he has to find that upon himself. And I think that’s what you’re starting to see, and we love that. We need more of it.”
The Cavs know they need to find something on the defensive end within their final nine games before the playoffs begin, and at least one series awaits. Jarrett Allen missing time has hurt, and the Cavs did reshuffle the rotation with three new key pieces at the deadline.
But as the season winds down, they need to find something that currently isn’t there. Which is why the thought is maybe if Mobley continues to find his voice as one of the top defensive players in the league, the rest will click.
“[Being outspoken and extroverted] isn’t natural for Evan, which is completely fine,” Atkinson said. “But we all know the old [adage], you’ve got to get uncomfortable to take the next step. And he’s improving tremendously, but there’s more in there.”
