NEW YORK, NEW YORK – NOVEMBER 05: Anthony Edwards #5 of the Minnesota Timberwolves warms up before the game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on November 05, 2025 in New York City.

The Minnesota Timberwolves won one of the wildest games of the NBA season against the Houston Rockets in overtime on Wednesday night, despite not having franchise star Anthony Edwards, who remains out with a knee injury.

But while Edwards has been sidelined for over a week with right knee inflammation, the shooting guard is expected to make his return soon.

The Timberwolves are in a big race between the Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, and Rockets for a top-four seed in the West, and based on the latest injury update, they could get Edwards back right in time to secure home-court advantage for the playoffs.

Edwards was originally ruled out for one to two weeks, but according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, the knee injury wasn’t considered anything to serious, and that the star was a fast healer.

The 1-2 week timeline is intentional. Edwards has been a fast healer, so they are leaving open the possibility he returns sooner than later. But they’re not going to rush him. https://t.co/6bMvM2FHrW

But while sidelining Edwards was likely a precautionary measure in hopes of having him ready for what Minnesota hopes to be another deep playoff run, the team could be getting him back soon.

Per Krawczynski, Edwards could very well come back for the Timberwolves’ upcoming games against the Detroit Pistons on Saturday, but their next contest against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday feels more ‘realistic.’

“Edwards is nearing a return,” he wrote. “He has been doing individual work at the team’s practice facility this week. The Wolves play next on Saturday against the Detroit Pistons, but Monday’s road game against the Dallas Mavericks could be a more realistic goal.”

Previously, Shams Charania of ESPN echoed a similar sentiment when speaking on NBA Today on Wednesday.

“He’s dealing with soreness, some fluid, some inflammation in his knee,” Charania said. “He needed treatment to get some of the fluid out of that knee. But now he is progressing… all parties involved are optimistic that he is trending in the right direction.”

Edwards was seen warming up before the Timberwolves’ overtime thriller against the Rockets. While a prior update from head coach Chris Finch signaled he has yet to practice with the team, he’s expected to return soon from the minor knee injury.

Timberwolves Injury Report In Wild Game vs Rockets

Minnesota was also without trade deadline acquisition Ayo Dosunmu for the game against Houston. He was ruled out with a calf injury after first being listed as questionable.

Krawczynski described his status on the injury report as ‘concerning‘ and while he’s only sat out one game with the injury, his availability going forward is still unknown.

Additionally, key player Jaden McDaniels went down with cramps during the game, but according to Krawczynski, he isn’t expected to miss any time. He isn’t listed on the team’s injury report.

The Timberwolves beat the Rockets despite being down by 13 points in overtime. It was the largest overtime comeback in the play-by-play era, and was a statement win for a team that has hopes of winning a title with their current core.

Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert have lacked the consistency that Minnesota would hope to have, but in a crucial game that could have been a tie-breaker in the standings should Houston had won, the supporting cast came through in a big way.

The Timberwolves are now 45-28 and fifth in the West, a game and a half ahead of the Rockets and just two games behind the Lakers for the third seed. They have nine games left in their regular season schedule, and remain hopeful that an Edwards injury return will come soon.
