A record-breaking shot called for Jamal Murray to break out his signature celebration.

After hitting his fourth 3-pointer of the game – and 221st of the season to break Michael Porter Jr.’s franchise record for made 3s in a season – the “Blue Arrow” went to his signature celebration, pulling an imaginary quiver from his bag and firing after giving the Nuggets a three-point lead with 1 minute and 15 seconds left. He was aware of the record after a brief halftime conversation with Altitude’s Katy Winge.

“I just wanted to win. We were down,” Murray said. “We’ve got a lot of season (left) to break that.”

The Nuggets needed one more, and Murray obliged with another dagger with 19 seconds left that provided the final margin of Denver’s 135-129 victory over a shorthanded Jazz squad that led by 14 points late in the third quarter. The final 3 of the night was followed by yelling into the crowd, though he declined to share the message.

“I remember every single time I yell into the crowd,” Murray said. “It’s just a good feeling when they cheer you on and know what’s coming. They know I’m going to shoot some tough shots and probably make it. … I gain more confidence as they yell more and appreciate it more. It’s just fun to have those interactions and lift up the crowd.”

Murray finished with 31 points on 17 shots, including a 5-for-9 mark from 3-point range. There were also 14 assists against one turnover and six rebounds. The record-breaking 3 was a step-back to his left. The final one was a pull-up effort after a right-to-left crossover.

“His ability to play behind the pick off the dribble with Nikola (Jokic) in the two-man game, especially on the side pick-and-roll and just the work he’s put in, the ability to step back off both hands and makes 3s is such a big deal,” Nuggets coach David Adelman said. “Certain guys can do it with one hand. They have to manipulate the play to get to their left or their right, and he’s got to the point where it doesn’t matter which side he goes to, not to mention the transition 3s. The off-the-bounce stuff,  it’s just unbelievable.”

Jokic finished with another triple-double, dropping 33 points, 16 rebounds and 12 assists. Tim Hardaway Jr. contributed 21 points off the bench, while Aaron Gordon (17) and Cam Johnson (12) also scored in double figures.

Kyle Filipowski and Cody Williams led the Jazz with 25 and 24 points, respectively. Utah scored 84 of its points in the paint.

While it’s already a record-breaking season, there are still seven games left to extend the record. Murray said his approach hasn’t changed, nor has where he’s found his 3s coming from.

“I’m just chucking them,” Murray said with a grin.
