HOUSTON — Illinois is headed to the Final Four for the first time since finishing as national runner-up in 2005 after a gritty 71-59 win against Big Ten foe Iowa in the South Regional. Freshman Keaton Wagler was outstanding in the performance, totaling 25 points to lead all scorers, and the resilience of the Fighting Illini was on full display as they roared back from an early 10-point deficit and took control of the game in the second half.

Illinois out-rebounded Iowa, and won around the rim late to be able to keep pace with Bennett Stirtz and Iowa’s shot-making. Stirtz had 24 points to lead the Hawkeyes.

There is devastation for Iowa, being so close to the Final Four and even controlling the game early, but Illinois’ ability to out-execute Iowa late made the difference.

Wagler has been one of the best players in the country all season long and here in Houston he was recognized as the Most Outstanding Player of the South Regional. Wagler had a game-high in points in the win against Iowa and a double-double (13 points, team-high 12 rebounds) in the win against Houston. Against the Hawkeyes, Illinois let Wagler control the game in the final possessions and he was able to score, get to the line and set up his teammates for the game-sealing buckets. In a game that was extremely heavy with fouls and physical throughout, Wagler’s ability to play through contact and beat his man on the dribble allowed him to be a difference-maker at the line with a 7-for-7 showing on free throws.
