Jason Kidd says Cooper Flagg winning Rookie of the Year is a “big priority” for the Mavericks.
Dallas Mavericks forward Cooper Flagg has been outstanding in his rookie season.
So far, Flagg has emerged as the favorite to win the Rookie of the Year award, but he faces serious competition from Charlotte Hornets sharpshooter Kon Knueppel, who is making a strong case to take the honor from his former Duke teammate.
Despite the competition, Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd believes Flagg is more than deserving of the award and called it a “big priority” for the team.
“Yeah, it’s a big priority,” Kidd said, via Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal. “It’s a big award – you’re only a rookie once. Cooper has to do his part, and he is. He’s having a historic year.
“When you compare his numbers to past rookies who have won, it’s clear-cut – it’s not even close. Sometimes voting can be influenced by popularity or trends, but strictly based on performance, Cooper is as good as anybody.”
This season, Flagg is averaging 20.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in around 34 minutes per game.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks are currently 13th in the Western Conference with a 24–50 record.
