The Golden State Warriors have been linked with LeBron James for years. The notion of pairing James with Stephen Curry is has long been the subject of barbershop talk throughout the Bay Area, and potentially around the world. We’re talking about the top two talents from their generation, teaming up, taking one final run at adding another championship ring to their trophy case.

In a recent article from Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard, acquiring James could be a possibility this summer. However, he did note that Golden State would first need to shed salary without gutting the roster. Kawakami suggested signing Draymond Green and Kristaps Porzingis to team-friendly, two-year $40 million contracts. That would free up the NTPMLE to sign James for roughly $15 million.

“The LeBron/Warriors rumors have percolated for years,” Kawakami wrote. “Same financial story: He’d likely have to take a pay cut down to $15 million to consider the Warriors.”

Getting James to agree to just $15 million for the season would likely be a sizeable hurdle. Yet, if the return was a legitimate run towards a championship, the veteran superstar could potentially be convinced to listen. After all, a starting five of Curry, James, Jimmy Butler, Porzingis and Green has a championship contender written all over it.

Of course, Golden State won’t be the only team interested in acquiring James this summer. The Warriors may need to contend with the allure of a third trip back to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Still, Golden State must try to add James this summer. They need another top-tier talent, especially if they’re going to put this season behind them.
