Status Update: Marvin Bagley III is officially listed as questionable for Monday’s matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves due to a left shoulder impingement.

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks may be shorthanded in the frontcourt when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night. Marvin Bagley III is officially questionable as he continues to manage a left shoulder impingement suffered during Friday’s victory against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Bagley provided a massive spark for the Mavericks (24-50) in their 100-93 win over the Trail Blazers, scoring a season-high 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting. However, his night was interrupted late in the third quarter when he was forced to the locker room to have his left shoulder examined.

While he showed significant resolve by returning to the floor with 8:31 remaining in the fourth quarter to help secure the win, the Mavericks are exercising caution ahead of the final week of the regular season.

‘Reading the Game’: Marvin Bagley III’s Impact in the Pocket

Bagley’s performance in Portland was a masterclass in reading defensive rotations. He consistently found “pockets” in the defense created by Klay Thompson‘s gravity and Brandon Williams‘sdownhill pressure.

“Just my teammates finding me in the right spots. I was able to find my openings, find my pockets within the offense,” Bagley told Dallas Hoops Journal. “Guys were being aggressive driving, and I was doing my part to make myself available, and they were able to find me. So shoutout to my teammates. I just tried to stay aggressive for those guys and continue to do positive things to help the team throughout the whole game.”

Bagley, who is averaging 10.6 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 18 games with the Mavericks, noted that the team’s connection and communication reached a high point down the stretch, allowing them to execute their game plan despite his physical limitations.

“Yeah, it’s great, man. Any win in this league is good to have, especially when you play together like we did tonight. I think we were all connected. Communication was at a high level defensively,” Bagley said. “We were able to stick to our game plan and do what we went over in shootaround. It was a collective effort tonight, and we were able to get the job done. It’s always great to get a win in this league.”

Matching the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Size

If Bagley is unable to suit up, the Mavericks will rely even more heavily on the expected return of Daniel Gafford, who is listed as probable with a right shoulder sprain. Dwight Powell has started since Gafford’s injury, averaging 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 18.6 minutes per game.

The challenge on Monday features one of the NBA’s most daunting interior defenses, anchored by Rudy Gobert. While Gafford provides the verticality to challenge Gobert at the rim, P.J. Washington noted that Bagley’s pick-and-roll versatility proved to be a “mismatch nightmare” against Portland.

“He was being dominant. We were finding him and giving him the ball and just letting him do him. Obviously, he’s scoring at a high level in the paint. He’s just a mismatch nightmare for them tonight,” Washington told Dallas Hoops Journal. “When he’s in the pick-and-roll, it’s good for us. If we hit him in the pocket, he can make plays, he can pass, he can score. I think he just had a great night tonight for sure.”

The Mavericks currently sit at 13th in the Western Conference and are focused on health as they evaluate their rotation for the 2026-27 season.

Dallas has other injuries on the report entering Monday’s game aside from Bagley and Gafford, including Naji Marshall (illness) listed as probable, while Caleb Martin (right plantar fascia strain) is doubtful. Each of the three two-way contract players — John Poulakidas, Tyler Smith and Moussa Cissé — is questionable to play, while Kyrie Irving (left knee surgery) and Dereck Lively II (right foot surgery) remain out for the season.

Minnesota will be without Jaden McDaniels (left knee patella tendinopathy) as he’s been ruled out already. Anthony Edwards (right knee patellofemoral pain syndrome) and Ayo Dosunmu (right calf soreness) are questionable.
