The Boston Celtics won their 50th game of the season on Sunday night in Charlotte. They now have a 2.5-game lead over the New York Knicks for the No. 2 seed, and according to data from Basketball Reference, the Celtics now sit with a 90 percent chance of securing that No. 2 seed.

With just eight regular season games left, the Celtics have created significant breathing room in the standings.
Securing the No. 2 seed would likely mean home-court advantage through at least the first two playoff rounds and a favorable matchup against one of the lower seeds. Given Boston’s depth and recent form, that positioning could prove crucial as Jayson Tatum continues to ramp up following his return from injury.
