Local basketball player joins Washington Wizards organization

Alondes Williams, a former basketball player with Triton College in River Grove, moved up from the National Basketball Association’s G league, signing a short-term contract with the Washington Wizards.

He played with the Wizards on a 10-day contract last month, showing the skills he earned when he helped Triton win the 2019 NJCAA Division II championship and two NJCAA Region IV titles.

While spending two seasons with the Trojans in 2017-19, Williams scored 1,059 career points, was named North Central Community College Conference Player of the Year and first-team All-Region IV honors. He also was named 2018-19 co-male Athlete of the Year.

Williams has appeared with the Brooklyn Nets, Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat, as well as playing in the G League for the Sioux Falls Skyforce, Mexico City Capitanes, Long Island Nets and Capital City Go-Go. He was recognized as the 2023-24 NBA G League Most Improved Player.

Women voters discuss Richardson book on democracy

Historian Heath Cox Richardson’s book “Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America” will be the feature of the League of Women Voters of the La Grange Area from 7 to 8:30 p.m. April 16 at the La Grange Public Library, 10 W. Cossitt Ave.

In her book, Richard explains how a small group of wealthy people have led the country into authoritarianism, waging war on US ideals. Copies of the book are available at the front desk of the library.

Elmhurst library brings materials to patrons

The Elmhurst Public Library offers a homebound delivery service Tuesdays and Thursdays, which aims to make the library accessible for Elmhurst residents who can’t come to the library, whether that ability is temporary or permanent.

Staff and volunteers deliver materials such as CDs, audiobooks and books to residents who can’t leave their home because of a disability, illness or other factors. Participants must live within Elmhurst city limits and have an Elmhurst Public Library card in good standing.

Santana music to fill Legion post at concert

Fuze Band will present a Santana tribute show concert at 8 p.m. April 10 at American Legion Post 1941, 900 S. La Grange Road in La Grange.

The Latin rock band blends “pulsating energy with rich, soulful artistry,” playing Satana, classic rock, salsa and other genres. Food and a cash bar will be available. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Mental health featured in fair at Triton College

Those interested in learning more about local mental health organizations and resources are invited to the mental Health and Wellness Resources Fair planned for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 8 in the Student Cafeteria at Triton College, 2000 Fifth Ave. in River Grove.

The event, hosted by the college’s Counseling and Wellness Support Services, allows community members the opportunity to connect with organizations as well as to join wellness activities designed to promote well-being and to reduce stress.

The free event includes a yog class, tai chi and meditation sessions, chair massage, a sound bath hearing experience, healthy refreshments and giveaways.

“Mental health and wellness are essential for academic success, workplace productivity and overall quality of life,” counselor Sylvia Sztark shared via a news release.

Darien Garden Club hosts talk about shrubs, trees

A master gardener with the DuPage County University of Illinois Extension will talk about how to select trees and shrubs, including selecting native plants, during a meeting of the Darien Garden Club at St. John Lutheran Church, 7214 S. Cass Ave. in Darien.

Socializing begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program from 7 to 8 p.m. where Gail Sanders will discuss the characteristics and types of shrubs and trees to enhance gardens. The club’s general meeting follows at 8 p.m.
