Mark Cuban offered a rare and blunt reflection on his decision to sell the Dallas Mavericks, admitting one key regret that still lingers.

In a teaser for the Intersections podcast, Cuban made it clear he does not regret selling the team. He pointed instead to the process behind it.

“It’s a big emotional commitment. You hear the passion, the swings, the highs and lows. Now imagine going through that every single game. That’s hard.”

“Then there’s family. My kids were getting to the age where they might have wanted to work in that environment, and I didn’t want that for them. It can be abusive. If fans don’t like what you’re doing or the team isn’t winning, you’re the worst person in the world, and they treat you like it.”

“I don’t regret selling. I regret who I sold to. I made mistakes in that process, and I’ll leave it at that.”

Cuban sold 73% stake in the franchise in November 2023 for around $3.5 billion to Miriam Adelson and Patrick Dumont. At the time, the move marked the end of one of the most hands-on ownership runs in the league.

Since the sale, the franchise has gone through a lot of changes. Luka Doncic is gone in a blockbuster trade that stunned the league. The Mavericks hoped that the trade could become a win-now move, but it clearly didn’t work out.

The fallout turned the Mavericks fans against the front office. And the trade clearly didn’t work out, with Anthony Davis playing only 29 games before being traded himself. Nico Harrison, the man who spearheaded the Doncic trade, was fired earlier this season.

The only saving grace for the Mavericks is that they got Cooper Flagg, the number one pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, which gave them a new foundation piece.

Cuban’s comments clearly show a mix of clarity and frustration. At the time, the sale made sense to him, but the outcome today does not.
