College Career

As a sophomore, Philon has spent his entire collegiate career with the Crimson Tide. He had a great rookie campaign with Alabama, demonstrating his competence as a versatile guard. He had proven himself to be a crafty ball-handler and disruptive defender, which earned him SEC All-Freshman honors. Undoubtedly, Philon showed enough to have been drafted in last season’s draft, but he chose to stay for another campaign.

This season, Philon vindicated his decision to stay in school and be the lead guard for Alabama. Specifically, Philon has shown vast improvements as an offensive player. Alongside his great ball-handling, Philon has demonstrated major improvement as a shooter and playmaker. With the departure of Mark Sears, Philon filled his shoes as their primary offensive creator, proving to be a reliable first option. His excellence in that role helped the Crimson Tide make it all the way to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. On the season, Philon averaged 22.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.2 steals in 30.9 minutes per game. Additionally, he shot 50.1% from the field, 39.9% from three, and 79.8% from the free-throw line. For his efforts this season, Philon was named to the 2025-2026 All-SEC first team and received All-America third team honors from AP, NABC, Sporting News, and USBWA.

Strengths
Offense

There is a lot to like with Philon on the offensive end of the floor. To start, Philon is a real three-level scorer who can score efficiently from pretty much anywhere on the court. Using his crafty handle and change of pace, he is great at getting into the paint and scoring around the rim. Philon is an expert at using the pick-and-roll to get downhill and attack defenses. Not only is he effective at scoring around the rim this season, but he still retains his strong mid-range capabilities, particularly his floater.

What improved the most in terms of his scoring is his three-point shooting. Philon saw a major jump in his efficiency and volume beyond the arc, going from 31.5% on 3.4 attempts to 39.9% on 6.2 attempts per game. While he struggled to space the floor last season, Philon has now proven himself to be a legitimate pull-up three-point shooter who can use his handle to free himself for that type of shot. Whether it’s a catch-and-shoot three or an off-the-dribble three, Philon has shown that he can reliably knock down shots from distance.

In becoming the lead guard for Alabama, Philon had to step into a primary creator role for his team in terms of playmaking. With that role change, Philon has demonstrated that he is a capable playmaker in his own right. He uses his downhill attack to collapse defenses and open up scoring opportunities for his team. Defense

In terms of his weaknesses offensively, Philon’s athleticism and strength hold him back. The NBA is filled with some of the best and most skilled athletes in the world. Philon isn’t the quickest, strongest, or most athletic guard in the draft, which can cause him translation issues when going to the league. His lack of strength can make his drives less effective as strong-bodied defenders can knock him off course. Getting stronger is an imperative for Philon and his development. Also, his lack of athleticism can give Philon trouble as he may struggle to finish at the rim since he is very much a below-the-rim finisher.

Defense

The big thing that weighs Philon down defensively is his overall lack of size and athleticism. While not the smallest guard, Philon’s size will limit him to only defending guards and not much else. It should also be noted that Philon isn’t the strongest guard either, which gives him trouble when going through screens. Philon has seen a drop in his defensive production compared to his freshman season with Alabama, with his steals in particular being down for his sophomore season. To be sure, much of that is due to his increased offensive usage, where he is putting more of his energy and effort. Philon could potentially return to the defensive production that he demonstrated in his freshman season in a more reduced offensive role.

NBA Comparison

One appropriate comparison considering Philon’s skill set is Indiana Pacers guard Andrew Nembhard. Neither guard will blow anyone away with their explosiveness or overall athleticism. However, both of them know how to combine their craftiness, basketball IQ, and skill to create advantages against opposing defenses. They’re both excellent ball-handlers who can efficiently score on all three levels and play-make like a lead guard. Not only can either one of them fill a lead guard role, but they have the versatility in their skill set to play in a more off-ball role as well. Additionally, both Philon and Nembhard are solid defenders at the guard spots.
