Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton revealed he was diagnosed with shingles after experiencing a persistent headache.Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus and results in a painful rash.Coach Rick Carlisle stated the illness would slow Haliburton’s rehabilitation but not affect his overall return timeline.

Indiana Pacers All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton went on NBA on Prime on Saturday and shared how he found out he had shingles, which causes a rash and is far more common in older people.

Haliburton, out for the season due to a torn Achilles tendon suffered in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, was given a couple extra days off around the All-Star Break when he developed a bad headache.

“On Day 2, I had this crazy headache,” he said on NBA on Prime. “I don’t know what’s going on. It never went away. I was supposed to meet the team in D.C. but flew right to Indy because I had to see a doctor. We had all these appointments schedule for CTs, I thought I had these migraines.

“(The doctor) looked at me for five minutes and said, ‘Oh my god, you have shingles. This is gonna suck.’ I had a huge rash on my face for two or three weeks. Now it’s just been itching. Getting to the tailend of it.”

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle revealed Haliburton’s condition on Feb. 22, the team’s first game after the All-Star Break. Haliburton had been at nearly all the team’s home and road games, and has returned to the bench. Carlisle said the illness would slow down Haliburton’s rehabilitation but not affect his return as he was already sitting out for the season.

Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the virus that causes chickenpox. After someone has chickenpox, the virus stays in the body for the rest of his or her life and can reactivate years later. It causes a very painful rash. It’s far more common in older people but can afflict people who are younger.
