As we continue our look through the classes, today we bring up the sophomore class. Now, unlike the freshmen yesterday, the sophomore class was pretty disappointing considering that it was mostly transfers.
Powell easily had the best season amongst the sophomore class. Often finding himself in Coach Davis’s top seven, Powell was often one of the first guys off the bench and provided steady play as well as decent shooting from beyond the three. Powell finished fourth on the team in three pointers made and three-point percentage and had the fewest turnovers of any player who played at least 500 minutes this season. The biggest negative for Powell was at the free throw line where he missed more than half of his shots (14-29).
Grade: C+. Powell had three games where he hit at least three shots from behind the arc, but a lot of times vanished on the court and finished the season hitting 1 of 9 from downtown during the Tar Heels three game losing streak.
High was one of the seasons most frustrating players. During most of the season he looked almost unplayable missing easy shots, getting beat on defense, or turning the ball over in crucial situations. However, he came on strong after Caleb Wilson got injured, averaging 7.6 ppg and 5.8 rpg while providing energy off the bench for UNC. Despite this, he saw his minutes decrease in tournament play as Coach Davis shortened his bench and held High to just 14 total minutes against Clemson and VCU.
Grade: C-. I cant over look the maddening plays from most of the season, but also cant over look the steadiness he provided, which included his first career double-double against NC State, while UNC played without Wilson down the stretch.
Brown basically fought and at times outplayed High for post minutes this season before suffering his own season ending injury and missing the entire ACC season. In just 50 minutes of action Brown had 11 points and 13 rebounds but also had a whopping 15 personal fouls (that’s about a foul every 3 minutes). Brown seems like someone who will not be back next season as a fresh start may do him some good.
Grade: D+. I almost gave Brown and incomplete as I did Denis, but one Brown was in his second season and two he played 16 more minutes than Denis while appearing in one less game.
Matelkovic was a late transfer from High Point University whose biggest asset is that he is seven feet tall. Always designed as a practice player this season, Matelkovic appeared in just four games and was also lost to an injury.
Grade: Incomplete. Maybe he provides more next season under a new coach, but it is almost impossible to grade a guy who played 5 total minutes this year.
Holbrook would probably not have been on this team in past seasons as he would’ve been anchoring the JV squad. However, that team is gone and Holbrook provided the Tar Heels with one point and three rebounds over eight minutes across 5 games this past season and didn’t play a single minute during North Carolina’s last nine games despite being just one of four healthy bigs on the roster.
Grade: Blue Steel. This is where a guy like Holbrook belongs, it sucks that NIL has taken that from us.
