Hoop dreams came true for some girls basketball teams after the Los Angeles Clippers hosted the Parks and Recreation league finals at the Intuit Dome.
The 4-foot-tall and under hoopers from the city of LA’s Parks and Recreation all-star girls teams started their own March Madness drama with the matchup between Team Fernangeles and Penmar Rec Center.
“They are small. They’re mighty. They’re scrappy,” fan Leyna Weber said. “They’ll fight for every loose ball.”
Every year, the city of LA enrolls thousands of girls between the ages of 9 and 17.Â
“I don’t know, it’s exciting,” player Olivia Valencia said.
The games bring out the fans, with big brothers and grandmas packing the stands.
“Just excited for her and proud of her,” fan Kyle Salvador said.Â
This is the second year that the Clippers have hosted the finals. Thanks to the PlayLA initiative, which is funded by LA28 and the International Olympic Committee, most kids pay $10 for the whole season. With the UCLA Bruins heading to the Final Four, many of the girls vying for top spot in the city have dreams of continuing their basketball careers.
“I want to play in college, but I don’t want to go far from here,” player Zoe Ma said.
