Weber State University has announced that former NBA coach Kaleb Canales has been hired as the new men’s basketball coach. The school shared the news this week:

A new era begins in Ogden!

Weber State is thrilled to announce the hire of Kaleb Canales as the new head coach of the Wildcat men’s basketball program!

Kanales served as an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers for five seasons between 2009 and 2013 after moving up through the organizational ranks. During the 2011-12 season he filled in as Interim Head Coach in Portland for 23 games after the dismissal of Head Coach Nate McMillan. Following his departure from the Blazers, Kanales served as an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, and Indiana Pacers. His Indiana tenure was served under current Blazers assistant Nate Bjorkgren.

Weber State’s most famous alumnus, of course, is Portland Trail Blazers mega-star Damian Lillard.

“I am truly honored and humbled to be named the head coach of Weber State men’s basketball,” Canales said. “I want to thank President Leslie Durham and Director of Athletics Tim Crompton for their belief in me and my vision for this program.

“We will build a culture that is connected on both ends of the floor, connected in the classroom, and connected to the community. This is a program with a proud tradition, a world-class institution, and a passionate fan base. I’m ready to get to work.”

Throughout his tenure, Canales has drawn praise for his work ethic and generous spirit. Congratulations to Weber State and their new coach.
