The Boston Celtics have five games remaining on their regular-season schedule. They’re currently second in the Eastern Conference, 2.5 games ahead of the New York Knicks, who sit third. Therefore, barring a torrid stretch of games, the Celtics will likely face the winner of the seventh-seeded vs. eighth-seeded play-in tournament game.
From there, Boston will have a difficult road to the postseason, with potential matchups against the Knicks or Cavaliers, and then whoever makes it to the conference finals. Considering the Celtics are overperforming on preseason expectations, the fan base will undoubtedly welcome whatever challenges lie ahead.

Still, at this late juncture of the season, it makes sense to explore which teams pose a genuine threat to the Celtics in their quest to make a third NBA Finals since 2022. With that in mind, Adam Taylor and Mike Weber of “The Celtics Chronicle” podcast recently worked through an exercise where they placed each Eastern Conference playoff team into tiers. The idea was to visualize where the Celtics’ biggest threats are coming from, and how Mazzulla could look to counter them.
