The Indiana Pacers currently have a top three projected pick in the 2026 NBA draft, and this is the best case scenario after dealing with Tyrese Halbert‘s recovery from his torn Achilles. The paces roster has some nice talent like Andrew Nembhard, Aaron Neesmith, Siakam Ivica Zubac to name a few.

When looking at potential fits and the upcoming draft, the guy that clearly stands out to me is North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson.

Why Should the Pacers Draft Caleb Wilson?

There are certain players you watch in college and can immediately tell are on a whole different athletic tier than their peers, and that is Caleb Wilson. It’s not just the high-flying dunks, but the fluidity and ability in transition and in the half court to chain together movements.

His spins into fluid, high-efficiency finishes are unlike anything you see from other big men at this level.

He’s often been compared to players like Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O’Neal, and even Giannis Antetokounmpo, and the main reason for those comparisons is his dominance around the rim and his length, this guy looks like he can dunk any basketball thrown his way.

He’s not just a high flyer. One of the most impressive parts of his game is his vision. Sitting at 6-foot-10, today’s NBA is filled with big men who need the ball delivered to them.

Wilson has already shown the ability to not just be a forward who dunks and rim-runs, but a player who can have an offense run through him out of the high post. He has even flashed post-game ability as a creator with his fadeaway jumper.

When talking about the Indiana Pacers specifically, I understand they already have Pascal Siakam, but that actually makes this the perfect landing spot for Wilson. He can learn the post-game from Siakam directly. In some ways, Siakam and Wilson are similar players, both elite in transition, but Siakam’s offensive repertoire is far more defined after years in the NBA. Wilson would have the ideal mentor right there in his own locker room.

When looking at what the Pacers could do in this draft, it is clear Wilson would be a phenomenal fit alongside Tyrese Haliburton.

Why Caleb Wilson is a Future Superstar

He is not some clunky big who needs to stand on the wing, he is a player who can be elite in the pick-and-roll, or develop into one, and would immediately thrive in the dunker spot the way Aaron Gordon has alongside Nikola Jokić in Denver. Picture Haliburton pushing the pace in transition with Caleb Wilson as his running mate, a high-flyer filling the lane ahead of him. That is a nightmare matchup for any defense in the league.

Yes, Wilson’s game is still raw, and the lack of outside shooting is a legitimate concern. But instead of fixating on the negatives, look at what this guy does. He is a once-in-five-years athlete from the forward position, and that athleticism alone is something teams should sprint to the podium to draft. It is not just flashy dunks in transition.

His fluid athleticism chains his explosiveness to basketball-specific movement, pushing the ball up the court as a 6-foot-10 forward, weaving through multiple defenders, and elevating off one foot to finish at the rim.

Final Thoughts on Caleb Wilson Potentially to the Pacers

At the end of the day, if the Pacers are fortunate enough to land a top-four pick, they could be selecting a future superstar. The way I see it, Indiana needs a running mate for Haliburton they can build around for the next five to ten years.

Today’s best NBA teams are built on elite defenders, the Celtics have Derrick White and Jaylen Brown, the Thunder have Chet Holmgren, the Spurs have Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama, the Pistons have Jalen Duren.

That is what Indiana needs to find. Caleb Wilson may not be a guy who can immediately pull up from three, but neither was Giannis when Milwaukee drafted him, and look at what he became. That is the hope for Caleb Wilson.

His athleticism will put him on the map quickly, and the duo of him and Haliburton could develop into a top-five pair in the entire NBA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Caleb Wilson a good fit for the Indiana Pacers?

Wilson’s elite athleticism, lob-threat ability, and pick-and-roll upside make him the perfect running mate for Haliburton’s transition-heavy, pass-first style of play.

Is Caleb Wilson’s lack of three-point shooting a dealbreaker?

No — just like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Wilson’s generational athleticism and two-way impact give him a clear path to stardom even without an immediate outside shot.

What makes Wilson different from a typical rim-running big?

Unlike most dunkers who need to stand on the wing, Wilson can initiate offense out of the high post, push the ball in transition, and create for others — making him a far more versatile and dangerous player.
