The Thunder and Pacers are set to face off in the NBA Finals starting on Thursday, and the trash-talking memes have already started. The Oklahoma City Police Department has been getting in on the meme game throughout the playoffs. The department posted again after the Indiana Pacers beat the Knicks to win the Eastern Conference Finals on Saturday. OCPD officials posted a picture of Rumble the Bison and the Pacers’ mascot. The picture had the caption, “Indiana wants to be Oklahoma so bad they named their mascot ‘boomer.'” The word “boomer” refers to the group of white settlers who participated in the Boomer Movement and campaigned for the opening of “Unassigned Lands” within the Indian Territory that were later incorporated into Oklahoma. The University of Oklahoma used “Boomer” as the name of its football team before changing it to “Sooners.” OU’s fight song is “Boomer Sooner,” and fans constantly chant the two words during sporting events or in passing. In Indiana, Boomer is the official mascot of the Pacers. He’s a blue, furry creature with a white fur beard, and he performs stunts and acrobatics during games and other events. According to NBAMascots.com, Boomer was created in 1984 by an Indiana artist and was introduced to the public a year later. He was initially called “Boomer the Pacer” and was a fan favorite. The mascot changed his name to Boomer in the 1990s and has been the mascot ever since. The Pacers also have two other mascots, Buster and Boomer Jr. More Thunder HeadlinesNBA Finals Guide: Tickets, schedule and everything you need to know as the Thunder play for a titleTracking Thunder ticket prices for first two games of NBA FinalsSee when you can watch the Thunder play in the NBA FinalsOklahoma City Thunder return to NBA Finals after 13 yearsThe Thunder have won the Western Conference title.
