Driftwood Middle School Gets a Jumpstart on Earth Day Thanks to the Miami HEAT

WHAT:
In advance of Earth Day, the Miami HEAT is enhancing the outdoor learning laboratory at Driftwood Middle School while encouraging environmental awareness and engagement through ongoing experiential learning opportunities. The Miami HEAT will donate 100 plants for a new butterfly garden, 15 garden beds to expand the school’s existing vegetable garden, eight hydroponic systems and a nature-themed mural. The celebration kicks off with a special pep rally for students.

WHY:
The resources provided by the Miami HEAT aim to strengthen Driftwood Middle School’s already award-winning environmental programs and curriculum.
Driftwood Middle School’s commitment to hands-on environmental education, student wellness, energy reduction and student leadership has earned the school numerous honors. These include designation as a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School, recognition from the National Wildlife Federation as a Green Flag Award winner, a Florida Gold Apple Award, and a past winner of the Miami HEAT’s annual “How Low Can You Go” challenge, which encourages schools to reduce energy and water consumption throughout the school year.
In addition, Driftwood Middle School was named a 2026 Magnet School of Excellence by Magnet Schools of America for its Frank C. Campana Academy of Health and Wellness.
