This is an interesting take on the Boozer twins, even if it’s not quite accurate: Jeff Goodman compares Cameron and Cayden to former Ohio State stars Mike Conley and Greg Oden.
We say it’s not accurate because of the player comparisons. Oden was an astonishing talent before injuries ended his career far too early. Conley ultimately became the better player and, impressively, is still in the league at 37.
However, Goodman is not making a strict comparison between these players, saying this about Cayden:
“They are special. I said this about my comparison to John yesterday – Mike Conley to Cayden. But they’re different players. Nobody thought he’d (Conley) be a one-and-done and they’re different because Conley had blazing speed.”
“But more the fact that Conley played in Oden’s shadow. He came in and nobody … he was kind of the sidekick. It’s the same thing with Cayden to Cam; he’s kind of in the shadow there. Everybody talks about Cam being a double-double machine, which he is. Cayden’s really, really good.”
We’ve been wondering about this. Obviously the Boozers are not identical twins, since Cameron is four inches taller and plays in the frontcourt while Cayden, at 6-5, is a guard.
What we’ve seen of him though is really intriguing. He gets some criticism for not being overwhelmingly athletic, but that doesn’t bother us.
The most interesting point guard we’ve seen in the last few years in college was Michigan State’s Cassius Winston. That guy was unbelievably smart and able to control the court. Tragically, in his junior year, his younger brother apparently committed suicide by stepping in front of a train and then Covid hit in his senior season.
Although no one could expect him to focus on basketball after a great personal tragedy, between that and Covid, we probably missed his best basketball as a result.
To an extent, Cayden reminds us of him. He’s just a really, really smart guard, and his athleticism may be underrated.
So we kind of get what Goodman was getting at: both Boozers have great potential and focusing just on Cameron would probably be a mistake.
