Taj Manning may return to Bramlage Coliseum for a basketball game next season. But the Kansas State transfer will be wearing a different uniform if it happens.
After spending the past four years with the Wildcats, Manning has decided to finish his college career with one of K-State’s biggest rivals: Iowa State.
Manning committed to play for the Cyclones on Saturday, which means he is switching sides in the Farmageddon basketball rivalry.
Iowa State showed interest in Manning after he put together a solid season for K-State as a redshirt junior. Manning spent the vast majority of his first three seasons in Manhattan on the bench. But he started 13 games this year, and he averaged 4.2 points and 5.1 rebounds along the way.
He seemed to bleed purple throughout his time at K-State, but he decided to explore his options after new head coach Casey Alexander was brought in to replace Jerome Tang.
Iowa State will ask Manning to help provide depth to its frontcourt next season.
It used to be unusual for a college player to transfer to a rival school, but it is becoming more common. For example, running back Dylan Edwards switched sides in the Sunflower Showdown football rivalry and now plays for the Kansas Jayhawks after previously suiting up for the Wildcats.
Manning is one of eight outgoing transfers that K-State has lost to the portal over the past few weeks.
Italian big man Dorin Buca also decided to transfer on Saturday. He will depart Manhattan after averaging 3.2 points and 3.3 rebounds during his lone season in purple.
Serbian guard Andrej Kostic is the only K-State player who has announced plans to return next season.
K-State has picked up commitments from three incoming transfers and two high school recruits. Alexander is hosting several other prospects on recruiting visits this weekend. Those numbers could grow in the near future.
