The Boston Celtics’ frontcourt was supposed to be a weakness this season, but over time, they were anything but. Neemias Queta was a Most Improved Player candidate, while Luka Garza became a fan favorite. Oh, and Nikola Vucevic was starting to show some promise as a fit in Boston.
That’s why the prospect of an upgrade doesn’t seem necessary. However, Brad Stevens has never hesitated to make the team better when the opportunity has presented itself. That’s why Anthony Davis has some appeal – *from a talent perspective – and judging from the latest intel on him, he might be available again even after being traded twice in the last year.
Anthony Davis still wants to hear what the Washington Wizards’ front office is planning to do to improve the team for the 2026-27 season. Story at @TheAthleticNBA: https://t.co/KCHvwRihUl

Yeah, if Davis really thinks Washington will become a contender next season, this will inevitably lead to a fallout between the two sides.
Make no mistake. Davis is better than any of the Celtics’ bigs. In fact, he would be the best big Boston has had in their arsenal since Kevin Garnett. However, while pretty much every Celtics fan was onboard with trading for Davis back in 2019, in 2026, they shouldn’t be because of how much of a risk Davis is now than he was seven years ago.
Davis’ contract and injury-prone tendencies make him riskier than ever
Full stop. Davis’ contract is the biggest problem with trading for him at the moment. Next season, he will be the third-highest-paid contract in the NBA, with a contract worth almost $58.5 million, tied with Jayson Tatum and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Maybe is he was paid around $40 million, it wouldn’t be as big of a problem to take that risk on him. Then again, the Wizards likely wouldn’t have gotten him for as little as they did if he had cost that little. Davis is paid like a superduper star when most optimistically, he’s just super.
In other words, he’s not on the same stratosphere as Tatum or Giannis at this stage of his career. His tendency to suffer nagging injuries also compound the issue. Paying that much for someone who is now riskier than ever to play a full season isn’t smart for a contender.
Boston’s not that desperate (though that can change)
The Celtics have gotten such impressive production from their frontcourt this season that it wouldn’t be worth that kind of risk for them. It’s gotten them this far. Davis would be better, but with all the risks involved, Boston would be compromising continuity and proven product for a declining star.
Even if Davis hits the market, more teams would reach that point of desperation. There are plenty of teams that are desperate for that extra boost that Boston currently doesn’t need at the moment until further notice.
Should they become that desperate, it’s likely they won’t turn to Davis first. The only way they would is if Davis somehow gets bought out and is willing to take the MLE. And if that were on the table, he’d likely go back to LA first.
The Celtics are not a perfect team, and fans shouldn’t be opposed to some more help in the frontcourt. Anthony Davis once made sense, but not aymore.
