What the future holds for the Chicago Bulls remains a mystery. Everything from who will be the new management, who they will draft, or if head coach Billy Donovan will have a job. Beginning with management, after firing VP Arturas Karnisovas and GM Marc Eversley, the search is on.

Anyone who knows anything about the Bulls knows that the Reinsdorf ownership is laissez-faire. Hands off and delegate to others. That dynamic may be at work in the search for a new GM, and it involves front office leader John Paxson, per Dan Bernstein of 312 Sports.

“Right now, the guy on Michael Reinsdorf’s shoulder, leading him through this process, is John Paxson,” Berstein said. “In a lot of ways, John Paxson at the moment is the most important person in the Bulls organization. Whether he wanted to be or not, whether he wanted somebody like me to be talking about Pax, that’s just a fact. That’s just where they are…I’m told John Paxson will be heavily involved in these interviews, sitting alongside Michael.”

Throughout his career, Paxson has had many different roles within the organization. He is best known for being part of the first 3-peat championship team. It was Paxson who hit the game-winner in Game 6 of the 1993 Finals.

From 2003 to 2009, Paxson was the general manager. Then he became the president of basketball operations from 2009 to 2020, before Karnisovas took over. Afterward, Paxson served as a team advisor from 2020 to 2025.

The Bulls completed the season at 31-51. Also, they lucked out by snatching the Portland Trail Blazers’ first-round pick. Thus, they will have two first-round picks in the upcoming NBA Draft. Also, they could get a top 4 pick in the NBA Draft Lottery.
