The Oklahoma City Thunder Book Bus made a stop at a Tulsa elementary school Monday, handing out books to young students.

The visit took place at Patrick Henry Elementary, where kindergarten and first grade students were able to choose their own books to take home.

Building literacy through ownership

Organizers say the program is designed to promote literacy by giving children books they can keep, rather than borrow.

“That ownership of having a book at home that’s theirs — that they don’t have to return — is important for building a personal library,” said Macquade Parker, a community engagement outreach coordinator.

The program typically serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade.

What’s next

Summer registration for the Book Bus opens May 1, allowing organizations across Oklahoma to sign up for visits.

Organizers say the goal is to expand access to books and encourage reading among students statewide.
